An Artist and an Art Career

Artists who paint and show their art for pleasure only and artists who are keen to sell their work and look to their art as a career and a business, need the same tools to let people know about their exhibitions.  If no one knows that there is an upcoming art show and sale, then no one will come.  That is akin to wanting to have a party, booking a formal venue, preparing an elegant meal and not inviting anyone to attend.

Artists need the public to learn about their art shows and events and one very vital skill set is to be able to write a Press Release that is an informative, concise, and precise piece of writing that tells the newspaper, television and radio media what you want the public to know and what you would like the media to do in response to the Press Release.

You would say the media about two kinds of information:  an upcoming art show or other art event, or a report of a show or art event that occurred very recently.

Why would the media select a specific Press Release to publish, or write a tale about?  The answer is clear – their readers are interested in it.

What would make it fascinating?  It would be about a topic that would imminently impact specifically on their readers, right then, right there, particularly the local readers.

The tale is unusual, odd, unique, and might have a different twist.  It would be a hook that would make readers take notice.  This is where writing skill is worth its weight in

art.  This is where the writing weaves an exciting tale, in this case an artist or an arts organization and perhaps the involvement of a  V.I.P. to capture the public imagination.

Checklist:

All information is provided:  names, phone numbers, addresses, and other coordinates

dates and times, special instructions

Contact person, day and evening phone numbers, email addresses, websites

An opportunity for Photos or photos are provided and where and when.

The Press Release length is realistic

It is submitted in a timely manner not missing deadlines

The newsroom is called to find out names or sections where the Press Release is to be forwarded

The organization’s website is searched to find out who to send the press release to.

Whether or not the material is time sensitive and if so, when does it expire

Has it been sent to more than one person in a media Organization.  Let them know.

Most vital information goes first.  Remember that Ernest Hemingway became well-known because of his sparse sentences, and clean, clear, concise thoughts uncluttered by adjectives.  Remember the 5 w’s: who, what, where, when and why and sometimes, how.

Only start with “who” if the person is a V.I.P. and is easily recognizable to the general public, otherwise start with “what.”  Write “more” at bottom of first page, place “end” or

“30” when it is finished. It is the media’s choice to pick it up, to publish or not.

An appreciative contact and comment is welcome for the Press Release or a tale.

The art of having an art career is to make the word “promotion” a mantra.
